Gherald L. Hoopes, Jr.
Gherald L. Hoopes, Jr. is a native of the Gila Valley and holds an MBA from the University of Arizona. His prior professional affiliations included private industry roles with the Southern Pacific Transportation Company and the Shell Oil Company. President Hoopes joined the professional corps of Eastern Arizona College in 1975 to oversee business and administrative affairs and became the 20th president of the College on January 1, 1984.
During his eighteen year tenure as president he served three terms as chair of the Arizona Community College Presidents Council. He also chaired the Arizona Community College Association, a statewide organization focused on promoting and strengthening Arizona's community colleges.
Under President Hoopes' leadership Eastern Arizona College achieved unprecedented growth and financial stability. Major accomplishments included: the earning of two exemplary decennial accreditation reviews, sustained enrollment growth, the elimination of all long-term debt, and the largest facilities and land expansion in the institution’s history. President Hoopes retired on February 8, 2002, leaving the College a progressive, highly respected and financially secure institution of higher education.
