Introduction to Social Work

This course examines the profession of social work, its value base, field of
practice, and societal role. Major social problems, philosophies of social welfare
provision, program and policy initiative, and the response of social work as
a profession are addressed. In addition, the obligation of professional social
workers to promote social and economic justice on the behalf of populations vulnerable
to or oppressed by ethnocentrism, racism, sexual orientation, disability, ageism,
or religious/spiritual affiliations is emphasized.

Study of Substance Abuse

This course is designed to improve knowledge pertaining to substance abuse.
It will assist the student in gaining an understanding of the general phenomena
of substance abuse; its etiology, psychological, and biological effects; specific
abuse problems; and legal, social, and treatment issues. Student will acquire
a broad overview of the social work profession.
