Who Comes to Eastern?
It’s just a short drive from MARY KIM TITLA'S childhood
home to the newsroom at KPNX Channel 12 in Phoenix—but it
seems a world away. Mary Kim, a member of the San Carlos Apache
Tribe, majored in journalism at Eastern and was a member of the
Native American Club, the newspaper and yearbook staffs, and on
the pom pom squad “It’s up to you to make your experience
enjoyable wherever you go, but it’s easy at Eastern because
there are so many opportunities.” According to Mary Kim, she
really enjoyed her experience at EAC. “I learned good study
habits, and the instructors helped students feel good about themselves.” Today,
Mary Kim—who earned a BA in journalism at the University of
Oklahoma and an MA in mass communications at ASU—is an award-winning
reporter. She also serves as a board member of the Heard Museum
and the United National Indian Tribal Youth. And she takes the EAC
message home. “Anyone can fit in. There’s such a diverse
group of students at Eastern. When I go back to the reservation,
I try to show the children that, if I can do it, they can do it,
too.”
