Methods of firing-woodfire. Firing of pottery by using the ancient Japanese
method of Unagama in which pottery is enhanced by the flame and melting ash in
the firing, which lasts for approximately three days. The unique locally
designed kiln will be fired fall semester during Thanksgiving weekend and
spring semester during spring break.

Methods of firing-salt fire. The use of fifteenth-century German firing
techniques in which salt is thrown into the kiln upon maturing temperature. The
salt rapidly vaporizes and combines with the silica in the clay to form an
"orange peel" effect on its surface. This hands-on course will consist
of making of ware, preparation of kiln, firing, unloading and cleaning up.
