Wordprocessing, spreadsheet, database, data communications (internet), are standard software applicational packages.  Special applicational packages included are desktop publishing, presentation, special multimedia, scanners, graphics and many others representing common software the student finds on their first computer and in the workplace.  True beginners may want to consider CMP 099 Computers for Beginners, before taking this course.

PC Troubleshooting and Repair

This course is designed to teach the basic principles of PC troubleshooting and repair, including providing a basic knowledge of PC components and their function and how to use Window built-in diagnostic tools.  It provides a foundation in diagnosing common symptoms and catastrophic failures as well as proper hardware handling and removal and reinstallation of common components.  It is recommended that students be familiar with basic Windows operating systems, navigation and menu and be able to use small hand tools.

Operating Systems I

In this course the rationale behind operating systems will be examined. Hands-on experience will be gained using operating systems, including the interaction of operating system commands with hardware facilities (e.g., secondary storage/hard drive) and file manipulation. The course deals mainly with DOS and Windows but other systems (e.g., Linux/Unix) may be used when available. It is recommended that one introductory course in computers be completed prior to enrolling in this course.

For computer majors.  Non-majors who have completed CMP 110 may also take the course.  This course prepares the student for completing computer applications at work and at home.  Students will go through stages involving problem definition to problem completion with current software packages in society to include spreadsheet, database, multimedia, full internet applications and others.  This course and CMP 201 prepare the major for CMP 251 Computer Practicum.

This course prepares the student to develop websites for use in all areas of society.  The student develops an understanding of networking requirements for the internet.  Website tools such as graphics software, languages including Java, website editors, HTML and others are used in the course to help prepare the student for web master duties.  May petition to waive prerequisite if internet experience warrants.
