NUR 100
Nursing Assistant
5 to 12 credits
Offered upon request

A course designed to prepare individuals for entry-level positions as nursing assistants in structured health care settings directly supervised by a registered or licensed practical nurse.  At the completion of this course, the students may be eligible to complete the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) written and manual skills test.  Successful completion of the NNAAP will lead to a certification as a nursing assistant through the Arizona State Board of Nursing.

NUR 120

Fundamentals of Nursing
8 credits

Offered every fall semester
This course introduces concepts of nursing, nursing process, roles, fundamental skills, pharmacology, medication administration, communication, growth and development, stress and adaptation, care for elderly, and clients in long-term care facility, and care for client who has surgery and alteration in mobility. Emphasis is on basic assessment skills, analysis skills and use of nursing diagnosis, and the physiological and safety needs of clients.

NUR 130
Family Nursing
8 credits

Offered every spring semester
Prerequisite: NUR 120
This course focuses on application of nursing process to assist the family with health and illness issues encountered during childbearing, nursing care of mother and newborn, and nursing care of children.  Emphasis is on health promotion, supportive care, continued accountability, and effective use of communication, and health teaching.  Clinical experiences are in maternity and pediatric nursing.

NUR 219

Pharmacology
3 credits
Offered every fall semester
Prerequisite: CHM 130
The study of the interaction of chemicals with living organisms to produce biologic effects.  The emphasis is on the general principles of drug action that form the basis for understanding the actions of specific drugs.  This course introduces the pharmacologic basis of clinical practice.  Identical to HCE 219.

NUR 230
Mental Health Nursing
3 credits

Offered every summer term
Prerequisite: NUR 130
This course focuses on application of nursing process in meeting needs of clients in psychiatric/mental health settings. Concepts related to emotional problems, and pathological reactions to life stresses are studied. Progression is toward increased responsibility for establishment of therapeutic relationships and development of individualized plans of care. Clinical experiences are expanded with an introduction to psychiatric nursing.

NUR 240

Medical-Surgical Nursing               
8 credits
Offered every fall semester

Prerequisite: NUR 230
This course focuses on acutely ill hospitalized clients of all ages. Concepts related to health and illness, alterations of nutrition and metabolic patterns, alterations of skin integrity, alterations of endocrine function, and alterations of elimination are studied.  Emphasis is on decision making and evaluation in nursing process. Clinical experiences permit student to demonstrate beginning proficiency in the role of graduate nurse.

NUR 250

Advanced Nursing
8 credits

Offered every spring semester
Prerequisite: NUR 240
This course concentrates on clients with multiple health problems and critically ill clients of all ages. Concepts related to alterations in activity and exercise patterns, alterations of cognitive and perceptual patterns, and alterations of sexual and reproductive patterns are studied.  Management skills and legal implications to nursing are also studied.  Emphasis is on decision-making and evaluation in nursing process. Clinical experiences permit student to function as an accountable member of the health team in preparation for the graduate role.

NUR 295
NCLEX-RN Review
4 credits

Offered upon request
Prerequisite: NUR 250 or concurrent enrollment in NUR 250 required
This course reviews the standard curriculum for nursing programs including universal principles, maternal child and pediatric nursing, psychiatric and mental health nursing, as well as adult health and critical care.  It includes a review of the structure and scoring of the NCLEX, as well as suggestions for preparation and test taking strategies.
