What does it take to be a successful web course student?

To be successful, web course students need certain skills (such as familiarity with using email, browsers, and word processors) and a high degree of discipline and motivation. Here are some other characteristics that favor success in web courses. The student:

  • Realizes that web courses require AT LEAST as much time and study as on-campus courses. (Successful distance education students typically report spending more time, not less, than for regular course.)
  • Is a reader with good comprehension skills. (Directions are generally in written form without face-to-face or verbal communication.)
  • Does not require interaction with other students and instructors to grasp materials.
  • Is interested in trying new methods of learning.
  • Is not afraid of new technology—utilizes the computer as a tool, like pencil and paper.
  • Has experience using the Internet, searching for references and browsing.
  • Is organized in submitting coursework with proper labeling.
  • Is patient.

How do I register for an EAC web course?

Register online using Gila Hank Online, EAC’s web-based registration system or over the phone with the Records and Registration Office at (928) 428-8270 or 1-800-678-3808, ext. 8270.

How much does the course cost?

Whether you are an Arizona resident or out-of-state student, EAC’s tuition remains among the lowest of Arizona community colleges. Effective Fall of 2007, tuition for EAC’s web courses is the same as for on-campus classes with an additional online fee of $50 per credit for out-of-state students.

Proposition 300, passed by Arizona voters in November 2006, stipulates that college students who are not legal United States citizens or are without lawful immigration status must pay out-of-state tuition.

How do I start the course?

Find your instructor in the employee directory. The next step is usually to send an email to the instructor. The instructor will then contact you with a login ID and password and other information. When checking in with your instructor, include your name, mailing address, course name or number, phone number including area code, and email address.

What about textbooks or other course materials?

Textbook requirements vary by course. The syllabus will list all texts, lab kits or software needed for the course. Course materials can be ordered through the Eastern Arizona College Online Bookstore.

What Is WebCT?

WebCT Campus Edition 4.1 is the web-based course management system used at Eastern Arizona College. Using a standard Web browser and Internet connection, WebCT provides instructors and students with access to course materials from anywhere at anytime.

How do I learn to use WebCT?

View our online tutorials where we show you how to work in WebCT. You can also click the "Help" link on the top right of any course page. WebCT Help is context sensitive. For example, if you click "Help" while using the course discussions, the "Discussions Help" will open.

After logging in, why do I see the message "You have not added any courses to your 'My WebCT'"?

Web course access isn't automatic just because you've registered for a WebCT-based course. Your instructor will contact you with an invitation to their course. Follow their directions and the course will show up on your myWebCT desktop.
