EAC Discovery Park Campus Presents Morenci Southern Railway

By Mylee Mayberry

Thatcher, AZ— Eastern Arizona College’s Discovery Park Campus Lecture Series welcomes Eastern Arizona researcher and Discovery Park Campus docent, Dan Best, with a presentation on the unique pathway of the historic Morenci Southern Railway. The lecture will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2015, from 6-7 p.m., in the Jupiter Room at the College’s Discovery Park Campus.

Best will be covering the Morenci Southern Railway, nicknamed the “Cork-Screw Railroad of America,” a daring railroad line from the San Francisco River to Morenci, with overlapping loops of track and bridges that attracted visitors to view “the wonder and curiosity.” His lecture will focus on the heavy grades and sharp curves, the limited train cars, the use and distance of the railroad, and why it is still magnificent.

“Come and enjoy this fun presentation that will take you back in time to experience the sights and sounds of the early Coronado Railroad and the amazing Cork-Screw Railroad of America” said Paul Anger, Discovery Park Campus director.

Don’t forget to tour the Graham County Historical Society’s display of historic artifacts, check out the “History of Astronomy” gallery, and take a ride on the “Polaris” shuttle simulator for a thrilling tour of the solar system! Finish off the evening by observing the fascinating night sky objects through the 20” Tinsley Telescope in the Gov Aker Observatory. All free of charge and just minutes away from home!
