EAC’s Department of Theatre Arts presents You Can’t Take It With You
By Steven Higginbotham and Dylan Prentis
Thatcher, AZ— George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, You Can’t Take It With You, has been charming audiences for decades, and now it comes to life in a new production at Eastern Arizona College! In this story, sweet-natured Alice Sycamore falls in love with the banker’s son, Tony Kirby. When she invites her high-strung prospective in-laws to dinner, Alice’s eccentric extended family may turn out to be too peculiar for the Kirbys to handle! After all, members of her household include an amateur fireworks enthusiast, an aspiring playwright, a would-be ballerina, a snake-collector, a xylophone-playing printing press operator, and more! Will true love prevail for Alice and Tony, even with these hilarious circumstances challenging their engagement?
You Can’t Take It With You will take the stage at Eastern Arizona College’s Fine Arts Auditorium, with evening performances at 7:30 p.m. on November 11, 12, 13, and 14, as well as a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, November 14.
With stage direction by Steven James Higginbotham, set design by William H. Nidiffer, costume designs by Timilee McNair, lighting and sound designs by Don Eller, and stage management by Dylan “Albie” Prentis, this production boasts a talented cast of student performers as the quirky and colorful members of the Sycamore’s household including Cecilia Abarca, Mason Bennett, Kobie Bigelow, Hailey Buell, Bill Griffin, Daken Hawkins, Megan Hope, Rick Hovelsrud, Celeste Leal, Tyson Lund, Irma Madrid, Brian Moore, Ian Mortensen, Andrew Peterson, Shaelee Riding, Kylie-Jo Soto, Amanda Striffolino, Sharlene Swan, Talia Thurber, and Steven Watson.
“EAC’s Theatre Department is thrilled to have local actor and community member Bill Griffin in the cast as Grandpa Martin Vanderhof,” says EAC theatre arts instructor and director of the play, Steven Higginbotham. “Bill is no stranger to the EAC stage, as he has appeared in many former productions, including My Fair Lady, Camelot, Oklahoma!, You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, and South Pacific.”
When asked about his experiences, Griffin replied, “For 20 to 30 years, I did two or three shows each season at the College. The camaraderie, the fun, and the excitement of working with students and seeing their love for theatre grow continues to bring me great enjoyment. I’m looking forward to playing Grandpa Vanderhof this time around!”
Tickets can be purchased at the box office before each performance or by calling Eastern Arizona College’s Ticket Office at (928) 428-8228.
