EAC Jazz Ensemble to present The Chronicles of Uncle Bud
By Lori Dugan
THATCHER, AZ—Eastern Arizona College’s Jazz Ensemble will come together for a special tribute concert entitled The Chronicles of Uncle Bud on April 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the College’s Fine Arts Auditorium. The concert is free; however, donations will be accepted and will benefit EAC band scholarships and programs.
The concert is meant as a tribute to the veterans of World War II, following the musical life of MoMMLc (motor machinist mate first class), Lawrence Mooney, aka Uncle Bud. He was a saxophonist with the Sealanders Coast Guard Band during WWII and also served as a landing craft motor machinist.
“The Jazz Ensemble will perform old and new arrangements of the music Uncle Bud performed during his 70-year music career,” said Dr. Clay Redfield, EAC’s director of bands and nephew of Uncle Bud.
The concert will feature the EAC Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combos, and special guest soloists from the 62nd Army Band. “It’s a musical journey chronicling the life of Uncle Bud with new twists on some of the big band jazz music of the WWII era,” said Redfield.
The show will also include a reenactment of a 1945 Seventh War Bond Drive radio broadcast in New York, and reenactments of some of the radio commercials of the era.
