THATCHER, AZ—Eastern Arizona College’s Discovery Park Campus lecture series continues with guest speaker Don Lancaster lecturing about the Mount Graham Aerial Lumber Tramway. This family-friendly program will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2008, at 6:30 p.m., in the Jupiter Room of the Discovery Park Campus.

Lancaster, a nationally famous computer and science expert, will present this program about one of the most innovative transportation systems on the Pinaleño Mountains: The Mount Graham Aerial Lumber Tramway, remnants of which can still be seen on the northeastern slopes of the mountain. Loggers, using the tramway, transported their logs and lumber from the upper reaches of the mountain down to the valley floor.

Harry Swanson, dean of Discovery Park Campus, says, “For decades, the crown jewel of the Pinaleno Mountains, Mount Graham, has been the preferred location for fruit farming, vacationing, hunting, and other outdoor activities. It was once the most important lumber producer in Southeast Arizona.” Swanson invites everyone to come out to Discovery Park and learn more about this part of the beauty and history of Mount Graham.
