Discovery Park Campus Lecture Series: The Big Guns of Astronomy Can You See Me Now?
By Lori Dugan
Thatcher, AZ—EAC’s Discovery Park Campus welcomes several members of the Desert SkyGazers Amateur Astronomy Club—Tracie Beuden, Bob Hiatt, Mark Madsen, Carmen Porter, Dan Roe, Dave Etter, John Ratje, and Paul Anderson—as they share an exciting slideshow and lecture, The Big Guns of Astronomy – Can You See Me Now? on January 8, 2011, at 6:30 p.m. in the Jupiter Room of Discovery Park Campus.
The presentation will be a group effort as they share information with a focus on the “Big Guns,” the telescopes that have set the standard as the most advanced telescopes of their time on Earth.
“All of the telescopes presented have rich histories and bright futures in research and discovery,” says Discovery Park Campus director Paul Anger. “Some of the amazing telescopes we will learn about include the Hale Telscope on Mt. Wilson in California and the Mauna Kea Observatory in Hawaii, which will be the home of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT).”
Other discussion topics for the evening include the role of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST).
There will be door prizes, Gallery tours, Space Shuttle simulator rides, and public viewing of night sky objects through the 20” Tinsley Telescope, all free of charge and minutes away from home.
