EAC awards scholarships to local students at annual banquet

Thatcher, AZ—Eastern Arizona College’s 27th Annual Scholarship Banquet was held last week to recognize the scholastic achievements of almost 70 EAC students.
The banquet, held at EAC’s campus in Thatcher, recognized donors and recipients of more than 50 scholarships. Many of these scholarships are annually funded by the contributions of a range of organizations and individuals, while other awards are funded by the earnings of endowments gifted to the College by various donors.
The Alumni Association Scholarship is presented to the child or grandchild of an EAC alumnus who has demonstrated exemplary character traits and academic ability. This year’s recipients were Austin Gardiner, of Mesa, Sarah Gomez, of Lakeside, Shawn Layton, of Globe, Landon Montierth, of Safford, Karalyn Ollerton, of Taylor, JayAnn Palmer, of Pima, Elizabeth Richins, of Animus, NM, Shauntel Simper, of Gilbert, and Nykell Smith and Seth McRae, of Thatcher.
The Bernstein Brothers Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Devin Alvarez of Globe. This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student pursuing an education in one of the natural sciences or a degree from the Industrial Technology division.
The Catholic Daughters of the Americas Scholarship is presented to a full-time student who demonstrates qualities of high moral character and integrity. This year’s recipient was Jacqueline Rose Villalba, of Safford.
Cheyanne Blaschke, of Pomerene, was awarded the Clara Curtis Bennett Memorial Scholarship. To earn this scholarship, recipients must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25.
The Dr. Dorine Chancellor Scholarship was given to Barbara Self, of Holbrook. This scholarship is awarded to a female student wanting to gain or enhance her career skills.
Cheyenne Gentry, of Pima, received the GFWC—Woman’s Club of Safford Bessie Layton Scholarship. This year’s scholarship is awarded in honor of Bessie Layton, who has served as a member of the club for over 50 years.
The GFWC—Woman’s Club of Safford Scholarship is awarded to a Gila Valley High School graduate majoring in music. This year’s recipient was Erick Lee Hinton, of Safford.
Adalyn Lines, from Safford, was awarded the Graham County Republican Party Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a graduate of a Graham County high school who is a registered Republican upon his or her 18th birthday.
The Helen Papas Memorial Scholarship is awarded by George Papas in memory of his wife of 53 years, and is intended to help music bless the lives of others. Delsy Shumway, of Snowflake, was this year’s recipient.
The Keith and Kathleen McBride Crockett Family Alumni Scholarship is awarded to the child or grandchild of an EAC alumnus. This year’s recipient was Mackenzie Fields, of Joseph City.
The Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW Post 10385 Scholarship was awarded to Aaron Mleynek, of Safford. This scholarship is awarded to a student who is a veteran or relative of a veteran of the United States Armed Services.
Heidi Engler, of Mesa, was this year’s recipient of the Latter-day Saint Student Association Scholarship. The LDSSA scholarship was established by Mel and Adeline Palmer and is given to a member of the LDSSA attending Eastern Arizona College.
This year’s Mary Kim Titla Scholarship was awarded to Brandi Yoyetewa, of Bylas. It is awarded annually to a Native American student enrolled full-time at EAC.
The Newman Sustaining Board offers a scholarship each year to a student returning to the Newman Center. This year’s recipient was Jacqueline Rose Villalba, of Safford.
The Ora Deconcini-Martin Scholarship is presented to a returning full-time student pursuing a degree in Business Administration or Business Education. David Hakes, of Mesa, was this year’s recipient.
The Paul and Blanca Roberts Percussion Scholarship was presented to Mikell Decker, of Winslow.
The Pizza Edge Scholarship, awarded by EAC Alumnus Larry Justice and his wife Diane, was awarded to Tasheena Maize, of Dennehotso.
The Safford Business and Professional Women’s Club Scholarship provides a scholarship to women returning to college after an interruption caused by occupational or family responsibilities. This year’s recipients were Sabrina Norgord, of Safford, and Lisa Isaksen, of Mesa.
The Safford Lions Club Scholarship was presented to Berenice Carbajal, of Safford, and Rheanna Berni, of Pima.
Katherine Leavitt, of Pima, received the Safford Rotary Club Scholarship, awarded to a deserving Graham County high school graduate.
Shannon King, of Mesa, received the William N. “Billy” Stroud III Memorial Athletic Training Scholarship.
The Ashley Marie Beals Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Mindi Marshall, of Pima. This scholarship is awarded to a full time student enrolled in the EAC Nursing Program or pursuing an associate of applied science degree in Pre-Medical Science.
The Debra Mullenaux Memorial Scholarship, a scholarship awarded to a married, full-time student with a minimum GPA of 3.0. This year’s recipient was Brittany Titus Whiting, of Snowflake.
The Dr. David G. Lunt Choral Music Scholarship was awarded to Caleb Dale, of Safford. This scholarship was established by the alumni and friends of the Eastern Arizona College Choral Department.
The Dr. Pamela Rule Memorial Scholarship memorializes Dr. Pamela Rule who taught Anthropology at EAC and served as Director of the EAC Museum of Anthropology from 1986-1989. This scholarship was awarded to Brian Bohot, of Chino, CA.
The Farrel C. & Bessie A. Layton Scholarship was presented to Kayla Roderick, of Thatcher.
Abbey Swain, of Tucson, received the George R. Bingham Jr. Memorial Drama Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a student seeking a degree in Theatre and Cinematic Arts.
Lacey Liljekvist, of Thatcher, was awarded the H. Greg Brockmeier Scholarship.
The Harvey J. and Loretta Olsen Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student seeking a university transfer degree. Clara Hoyle, of Pima, was the recipient of this year’s scholarship.
The Helen Johnson Bone Scholarship was awarded to Kimala McKenzie, of Safford. The scholarship is awarded to married women or women who have been married who are pursuing their AA or AAS degree.
Melissa Gurtler, of Clifton, received the John Mickelson Endowed Scholarship, given to a freshman returning to EAC for sophomore year.
The Kathryn Murphy-Spencer L. Kimball Scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in a university transfer curriculum. Summer Smith, of Show Low, was this year’s recipient.
The Meghan Lynne Hammer Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Robert “R.J.” Callaway and Allie Tolman, of Globe. This scholarship is awarded to Miami and Globe High School seniors who want to further their education in music at EAC.
Carlos Rodriguez, of San Simon, received the Phyllis Martin Lord Scholarship.
Jennifer Hakes, of Mesa, was awarded the Sarah Lamoreaux Memorial Scholarship, provided by the Edwin Lamoreaux family in loving memory of their daughter Sarah.
The William J. Bone Scholarship was awarded to Alexander Dahlstrom, of Willcox.
The Allen H. and Maria A. Cress Music Scholarship was given to Jessica Larson, of Saint David. This scholarship is provided to a student participating in the A Cappella choir.
Isaiah Thompson, of Bylas, was awarded the Anna Deane Millett, Don and Carlotta Pace Scholarship. This scholarship is given to a sophomore student who achieved academically while a freshman at EAC.
The Belle and Arnold Greenbaum Scholarship was given to Reagan Elmer, of Tucson. Family and friends of Belle and Arnold Greenbaum present this scholarship to perpetuate the memory of their involvement at Eastern Arizona College.
The Bette N. Smith Nursing Scholarship is funded by the family of Bette N. Smith, who was interested in the higher education of young people. This year’s recipient was Beth Perkins, of Saint David.
The Bob Wenger Memorial Scholarship was given to Jacob Rollins, of Elfrida. This scholarship benefits students involved in a music program at EAC.
Morgan Heimuli, of Tacoma, WA, was awarded the Dallace Butler Memorial Scholarship.
The Donald J. Caldwell Educational Scholarship was given to Deidre Hancock, of Saint David. This scholarship is given to a student in the EAC Nursing Program.
Keith Judd, of Saint David, and Cody Gentry, of Pima, received the Douglas Michael Loeb Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is offered to full-time students who are either majoring in Auto Mechanics or Automotive Service Technology.
Deserai Webb, of Safford, was awarded the E. James Lee and Jacqueline McFadden Lee Scholarship.
The Ella T. and J. David Lee Memorial Scholarship was given to Kellie Lamoreaux, of Pima. This scholarship is given to a student majoring in either Administrative Information Services or another vocational field.
The Elizabeth Louise Loeb Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in Business Administration. This year’s recipient was Monica Corona, of Williams.
The Emil Crockett Scholarship, provided by the Emil Crockett Insurance agency, was awarded to Alexandria Duran, of Safford.
The Follett College Stores Scholarship was awarded to Landon Williams, of Safford. The scholarship is awarded to students majoring in business who have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Liana Allen, of Safford, was presented the Fred and Olga Pace Scholarship. This scholarship is given to a Graham County resident returning to EAC in pursuit of a degree.
Amanda Weech, of Pima, was awarded the Mark J. Green Excellence in Spanish Scholarship. The scholarship is given to a returning EAC student, from a Graham County high school, who is enrolled in a Spanish course.
The Kalvert W. Lines Scholarship was given to Amber Sanford, of Tucson, and Porter Beus, of Pima.
The Ruth Merrill Moeller Scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in music. Anika Wilkins, of San Tan Valley, received this year’s scholarship.
Corey Boswell, of Globe, Brian Cook, of Pima, and Paul Kartchner, of Saint David, were each awarded the Sumitomo-Phelps Dodge Scholarship. This scholarship, established by the Sumitomo Metals Mining Corporation, is given to an Industrial Technology student.
The William D. Smith Memorial Scholarship was presented to Shayne Finch, of Eagar. This scholarship is awarded to a returning student majoring in drafting.
