Veterans Services at EAC: An Overview

By Lori Dugan

Thatcher, AZ—The mission of the Eastern Arizona College Veteran’s Services Office is to provide veterans the support they need to make the transition from military to civilian life through higher education by utilizing the GI Bill.

The Post-9/11 GI Bill reimburses tuition and fees to the school and makes housing and other payments directly to qualified veterans. Veterans may also be directly paid:

• A monthly housing allowance.

• A yearly books and supplies stipend of up to $1000 paid proportionately based on enrollment.

• A one time payment of $500 may be payable to certain individuals relocating from highly rural areas. Marta Nelson, EAC’s veterans services specialist, says that the process can be confusing, “I recommend that veterans call or come by so we can go over the process together to determine whether they qualify to receive educational benefits and how to activate and maintain those benefits.” The application and registration process takes 6-8 weeks but the College will issue a promissory note to qualified applicants so that they may begin school this fall.

All interested veterans are encouraged to call Nelson at 928-428-8273, or to stop by the Veterans Services Office, located in EAC’s Records and Registration Office in the Student Services Building on the Thatcher Campus.
